For the first time in a long time, LJ seems to be down.  Huh.

Random stuff

When LJ is down, I don't know what to do with myself.  It occurs so infrequently.  Sigh.

I am a terrible custodian of my own blood sugar these days. Did I really go out today to haul things around the yard in winter clean-up mode without eating breakfast?  Yes.  Yes I did.  What a maroon. No wonder I curse myself for being sch an out-of-shape weakling.  Add sugar fatigue and I'm a total whus.

Thinking about it as I type I realize its probably because of the increased dose of my meds - winter makes me SAD - and the meds suppress appetite.  So now, the food is in front of me, and all I have to do is wait a bit until my brain realizes that food is available.  Some days I never get hungry, and I have to eat when I don't feel like eating.  This is a bad habit to get into.  But that's another issue.

Been carb loading like crazy lately.  Winter much?  Blah.

Somebody around here is feeding corn, or perhaps *had* a decorative corn cob display.  I've got a little hoard of kernals in one of my borders, an interupted meal perhaps, and more disturbing - a kernel outside the door of the pump house.  I don't want critters overwintering in the shed.  Bad idea, guys, GO AWAY!  (I suspect the tree rats, which I really don't want in my yard.  GO AWAY, SQUIRRELS!)

I also found that we have some issues to deal with in the shed before winter really settles on the land - the lamps we use for heating this space need some maintanance work.  I think the shed needs re-shingling, too... there is evidence of water damage all over the ceiling insulation.  Yuck.  Next year, maybe.  I'll put it on the 'list.'

Did get the hoses put up, and the feed line to the exterior hose cock drained.  We've been replacing this piece on a regular basis - I really dislike the one we have now, it has two settings - off and full on.  This makes adjusting the sprinkler dispersal a bit of a nightmare.  Stupid idea.  But it was the only one that Lowes was carrying at the time we needed it, so there it is.  Much as I don't like it, I don't want to replace it AGAIN.  So there we are.  Hopefully it won't go 'splody sometime over the next few months.  You get weary doing the same things over and over - especially when your experience with the same items in the past tells you you don't need to.  Stupid cheapass manufacturers.  Or maybe, stupid cheapass homeowner.  *shrugs*  When and if we get a 'real' house, I'll be sure we get solid hose hookups.  Until then, I bitch.  sigh.

Sometimes I go and wander through my referrer lists.  It was very cool to see one of my pictures come up for the search <a href="http://www.excite.de/search/image/results?hits=16&q=November&qid=351effae0e99690dc2a5c9ebb0a14429&qs=&o=&format=&imtype=&offset=16">'November'</a>.  Interesting search results!

May 3rd: World Press Freedom Day

Every year, May 3rd is a date which celebrates the fundamental principles of press freedom; to evaluate press freedom around the world, to defend the media from attacks on their independence and to pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

3 May was proclaimed World Press Freedom Day the UN General Assembly in 1993 following a Recommendation adopted at the twenty-sixth session of UNESCO’s General Conference in 1991.

It serves as an occasion to inform citizens of violations of press freedom - a reminder that in dozens of countries around the world, publications are censored, fined, suspended and closed down, while journalists, editors and publishers are harassed, attacked, detained and even murdered.

It is a date to encourage and develop initiatives in favour of press freedom, and to assess the state of press freedom worldwide. It serves as a reminder to governments of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and is also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom. It is also a day of remembrance for those journalists who lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

100 Things About Meme - 2

2)  Being a June birth, I am a Cancer - or in some of more recent systems - a Moon Child. (I guess the word Cancer was too scary for modern sensibilities... or something...)

I don't put much stock in astrology, but I have always been intrigued by the systems humans create to try and make sense of the world.  In the Chinese zodiac, I am a Water Rabbit.  A rabbit, in Chinese mythology, is a resident of the moon. Science tells us the moon controls the tides.  The moon is a symbol of the sign of Cancer.  Cancer is a water sign.  All this interconnectedness makes me inexplicably happy.

I love the synergistic energy I create by locating information that links.  James Burke's TV show Connections was a big favorite of mine.

100 Things About Me/me - 1

1) I was born on June 26, 1963, at ___ in the morning, on a Wednesday.   The location was Detroit, Michigan.  I've lived in southeast Michigan all my life.

Currently, I'm in a bit of a panic as I thought I had put my birth certificate *right there* and have since moved everything around and now can't find the thing.  Sigh.  Every few years I do this to myself -go into full panic mode because I've misplaced something. I'm hoping I didn't accidently throw it away.  How bad would that be?

Anyway, when I find the thing, I'll add my time of birth to this post.

Temper, temper, Mr. President...

"I don’t give a goddamn,” Bush retorted. “I’m the President and the Commander-in-Chief. Do it my way.”

“Mr. President,” one aide in the meeting said. “There is a valid case that the provisions in this law undermine the Constitution.”

“Stop throwing the Constitution in my face,” Bush screamed back. “It’s just a goddamned piece of paper!”

This is the man with a mandate, damnit, and we better not forget that!

Jesus wept.

W - put down the bottle, get your head back out of your ass and shut the fuck up.  You are making yourself look like an ass, nevermind the rest of us.

Afraid to Dream, Even

The house in Ypsilanti.  Gorgeous, needs a little work.

(Click for larger pictures.)

Dreamhaus2
Really wants a glassed-in solar room back here - both to warm the house in winter (this is the south side) and to protect that stair from water infiltration.  I kind of wonder if it didn't once have something like this on that brick slab.

Dreamhaus3
The patio area has a few rough spots.

Dreamhaus4
This is the far corner of the yard.  Very nice.
