Give them alcohol.
This allows you to control the stem growth of the flower, effectively stunting it's growth. It's a process that emulates some of the things they do in the big production greenhouses, to make the flower more appealing to the market.
Personally, I like my flowers to be laden with their own personalities - straight and aristrocratic or loose and floosy as their nature dictates. I'll not be out with my shotglass in the garden anytime soon.

Interesting article. I remember reading once that beer was good for plants, although this article didn't recommend beer.

Interesting article. I have never heard of that before. Personally, I think I will stick to plain water, too.

Isn’t it ironic that flowers, when given alcohol are more controlled and that people, when given alcohol are out of control? Hummmmmm. There must be something of great significance here. Maybe we got it all wrong when we read the “book of life.” Where it said “drink, grow, and prosper," it wasn’t meant for us, it was meant for our flowers! Where’s Freud when we need him?
