Gardening in zone 8 - Phoenix, Arizona since May of 2007:
The journal of a gardener in transition from her former garden (Hogglebog, a zone 5 garden located in southeast Michigan) to her new garden in Phoenix, Arizona
I think you are right about the landscape blocking the view. But enjoy all that green in those hills, that's a show in and of itself - one you don't really notice until you are surrounded by hills of red stone and grey green sage!
I worked in Detroit, lived near Monroe but now retired to NW Ohio, just 15 miles south of the line. Anyway, we travel a lot and AZ is one place we love to go; especially Tucson and the Suguero Desert. And, yes, the sunsets are definitely showstoppers. Pictures never do nature justice, unfortunately.
I am zone 4 transplant to Phoenix. I am just starting to blog about my gardening experiences in Phoenix.
Check out my blog, I enjoyed yours.

Vey nice - we don't get many sky shows here in NH. We probably get more than we know, just the hills are in the way.
